In order to iron and emboss the skins, the ironing or embossing machines are used. In these through feed ironing and embossing machines, the skin is conveyed in the machine by an endless felt. A pressure cylinder either with a mirror surface or with an embossing design will press against the skin in order to change the appearance of it. The ironing and embossing felt will absorb some of this pressure and continue to transport the skin through the machine.

The ironing and embossing machines can be supplied with only one pressure roll or as well up to 3 pressure rolls, the rolls can then be exchanged with a revolver automatic system.

Furthermore, depending on the machinery brand and model, the working pressures varies from 50 kg/cm² up to 240 kg/cm². Traditionally, the temperature can go up to 150°C.

Depending on the type of ironing or embossing looked for, the ironing and embossing felt varies : the structure, the composition, the density and the thickness are adjusted.
